“PalaFang” is Amis for “Guests should be wholeheartedly welcomed and looked after.” This spatial work utilizes images of Hualien as a place of rest, relaxation and tourism, to express the joy derived from art in Eastern Taiwan. We believe that this casually understood appeal and less ambition-oriented creative approach reflects the original truth of art, which in an era of confusion and chaos offers a simple welcome to its guests.

Hualien is located in the East of Taiwan on the oft forgotten perimeter of the island and as a result, artistic projects promoted by the government often fall on stony ground. Occasionally, when central government appraisers think to themselves: “Let’s give the East a chance” or “there must be balance between urban and rural development,” although some things gets done, this does little to ignite the creative passions. In fact, artists in Hualien have little interest in the current anti-intellectual trend. Unfortunately, this has meant that over time they have lost control of their own space, critical position and funding. Their detachment from the wider world has eventually made them become more self-enclosed and individualistic.

Furthermore several artists in Hualien have their own direct way of connecting to the world of contemporary art. Some have formed an alliance with Britain’s “Triangle Arts Trust” and the International Creativity Camp they established has had much influence, creating a special landscape against barren backdrop. The group’s success was as expected as an octopus in a tree or a rock sprouting wings and flying away.

From 2003 to the present there have been five Creativity Camps that have spent surprisingly little while managing to invite 54 foreign artists from 24 counties and 65 local artists to take part. The sheer explosion of creativity these camps have facilitated has been truly amazing.

Although Eastern Taiwan does not have its own art policy, it is nevertheless home to a great deal of interesting art. A situation that prompts us to say that nature and the world, freedom and civilization are to be found everywhere on this planet. (Text by PAN Sheau-shei. Translated by Andrew Wilson)
