Mercurial Matter
2014-2017, 6 min. 16mm

Force Majeure
2015-2017, 5 min. 16mm

Change
2016-2017, 6 min. double 16mm

Five Movements
2017-2018, 35 min. 4K video

You Spin Me Right Sound
2018, 8 min. HD video

Program

Mercurial Matter
2014-2017, 6 min. 16mm
Mercurial Matter‘ is an animistic meditation on metaphysics and forces of nature. The film uses traveling mattes and optical printing in a rapid, wandering, single-frame perspective. Moving collages are created with scaling, scrolling, and rotating layered images.

Force Majeure
2015-2017, 5 min. 16mm
Force Majeure’ is a series of optical printing mistakes. Traveling mattes ought to be like camouflage; this very first attempt failed to achieve this and initially went in the garbage. They were fished out later, superimposed, and rephotographed, with tons of mechanical jamming. The result is these pulsing, stroboscopic, and graphic shapes.

Change
2016-2017, 6 min. double 16mm
Change‘ is an incantation of Chinese characters. It begins and ends on the word itself, ‘biàn’, and each recitation marks a related group of words. There are separate algorithms for text, color, images, voice, and music, adding several layers of lush and dense textures. It is an intense presentation of time and linguistics using Seal Script, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

Five Movements
2017-2018, 35 min. 4K video
Five Movements‘ is a diaristic interpretation of Wu Xing, a Chinese system of energies, roughly meaning, ‘five kinds of qi prevailing at different times’. Two nameless, unidentified characters explore phantasmagoric interiors and exteriors, activating objects, rituals, and spaces. A loose story that visually emphasizes color, composition, effects, lighting, and mood to unfold the Elements in a meandering, lucid exploration.

You Spin Me Right Sound
2018, 8 min. HD video
You Spin Me Right Sound‘ is an animated video essay that repurposes stock photography, sound effects, and advertisements. GIFs, graphics, and icons are accompanied with sardonic narration about the Mercator projection, world map distortion, and the pervasive presence of colonialism. It was recently released as a text-and-image article in Precog Magazine Issue #4: Empire Vampire.

* Special thanks to TCAC Taipei Contemporary Art Center for providing venue and support for this event.
** The after screening talk will conduct in English/ Mandarin.
