Documentary, including video, photos and texts

The “Invade and Clean” series, a collective project started in 2008, aims to break in and clean up abandoned buildings. The Chinese name “Nu Shao Guan-chia” (young female house-keeper) is a play of pun on a brand of cleaning detergent.

The sites we found while motorcycling around cities or through hearsay have nothing to do with us. They are discarded after years of disuse and often become invisible in the public’s negligence. They are thrown into history.

We cleaned and tidied them up, brought them back to an inhabitable status. We invaded but didn’t use them. Practicing the ordinary “cleaning” in these extra-ordinary “ruins” captivated the imaginations of home. The cleaners exorcise and the viewers evoke the spirits. But what spirits are there to be exorcised and evoked?

We corrected the calendar and adjusted the clock left on the sites so that they were brought forward to be in touch with reality. However, the cleaners would be gone, the time-correction took place momentarily. The recurrence was therefore a new disappearance. Ultimately it is an absurd fight staged against death.

In exhibit are documentations of the earlier incidents of this series and a full presentation of the most recent cleaning. The two-storey building is located in Tamshui. It was the former residence of Japanese artist Sizuhate Harakomoto during the colony and occupied by a Chinese general after the Second World War, and now is completely obsolete. The second floor was divided into small compartments for rental to students and small families. Various objects were left behind; some of these objects look   quite precious and memorable, such as a deep-sea turtle shell, a treasure case used during the big retreat to Taiwan, and a souvenir from Amami Oshima, etc.
