本作品是「向建築告別——洞洞館計畫」的延伸。

 

2010年初,我邀請了一群人向即將拆除的臺灣大學洞洞館告別。洞洞館建築群採用張肇康之設計,為台灣60年代建築重要指標,也是台灣現代主義建築的代表作之一,但由於諸多因素,將於今年拆除其中兩棟。於是我把建築視為單一客體,將建築體內外洗淨,猶如對待亡者的「淨身」儀式,並將拆卸後的室內裝潢和建築元素在室內重新展示。

 

在這件延伸作品中,我虛擬了一個試圖搬移建築的人,透過想像與現實之間的矛盾,說明記憶與空間無從分割,亦無法輕易透過物理狀態的移轉而保存。

 

本件作品攝影是關鍵媒材,慢速快門將時間內的動作凝於一瞬,燈箱的黑白畫面中模糊人影對比清晰的建物,在空間地面錯落、低矮佇立,如某個記載傳奇的碑文;燈箱材質選用拆卸自建築內部之早期木料,猶有木香。文字於牆面如詩文書寫,記載傳唱近半年發生在建築物左近之故事。影像中人以麻繩捆綁建築並企圖搬動建築,是捍衛記憶的表徵,製造記憶與物理的移動量可能成正比的錯覺;地面上擺放百公尺長之粗麻繩,盤旋纏繞,是影像中唯一出現在展場的物件,它是家庭錄影帶,是日記本,是一切我們在深夜試圖把昨天帶向明天的工具。(文/施昀佑)

This work is an extension of the “Dong Dong Guan Plan.”

 

In the beginning of 2010, I invited a group of people to bid farewell to the soon-to-be demolished “Dong Dong” (Perforated) Building at the National Taiwan University. The “Dong Dong” Building was constructed from a design by architect T.K. Chang. It was a landmark building for Taiwan in the beginning of the 1970s, and was an important representative work of Taiwan’s foray into Modernism. After much consideration, a decision was made to demolish two of the buildings this year. I have taken the two buildings as one structure, and gave the structures a thorough cleaning, inside and out, symbolic of a “cleansing of the corpse” ceremony. Afterwards, some of the dismantled items of interior décor and architectural elements were exhibited in the building.

 

In this extended work, I have simulated a person who is attempting to move an entire building. Through the paradox between imagination and reality, explain that spaces are held intact by memory, but cannot be easily transferred or preserved in their physical state.

 

Photography serves as the main medium in this work. A slow shutter consolidates motion within a time frame into one blink of an eye. The black and white images on the light box are blurred human silhouettes — standing up, crouched down low, and scattered like some legendary inscriptions against the crisp sharp lines of architectural forms. The light boxes were built from reclaimed timber dismantled from the interiors of the building. The words written in calligraphy on the walls are verses that recount the stories that have unfolded over the past half-year in the vicinity of the building. In the images, human figures tie the building with twine as they attempt to move it, symbolic of bolstering memory while creating an illusion that memory and physical mobility is proportionate. The several hundred meters of wound up heavy gauge twine rope are the only items from the images that appear in the exhibition space.

 

It is a family video, a diary. It is all the tools we have at our disposal in a late night effort to drag our yesterdays into our tomorrows. (Text by SHIH Yun-yu. Translated by Yvonne Kennedy.)
