Circumgyration: LaoSong Project

2009

A4; 60x80cm

Document, digital photographs

“Circumgyration” originated in 2001 as a photographic project for upper-level primary school children.  From its inception, the concept was to move away from documentary-style or photojournalistic photography, and toward a cinematographic or dramatic narrative style, with a purpose to explore the blurred boundaries between the present, reality and memory.

Initially, the proposed method for the project was to, first, find inspiration by observing a segment of school life as it occurs (specifically unstructured time, after class, playtime or clean-up time), or in dialogue between peers (an exploration of adult recollections of their own youth). Then, as the instructor, I would “cast” students, and get parental permission to reenact an event or scene to document during after class hours.

With due consideration to a certain contemporary quality, I decided to use large format 4×5 (and later, 8×10) cameras and film stocks for the production. Actual settings were combined with man-made lighting (studio lighting) to create a theatrical, or ceremonial space and atmosphere. The hope was to reinterpret the lives and psychological states of teenage men and women.

By planning rigorously ahead of time the shooting of “Circumgyration: LaoSong Project” that began in mid-June of 2009 was wrapped after five days. “Circumgyration: DengKong Project” was however much more slowly paced.

Since I am not on the faculty of LaoSung Elementary School, I shortened the actual shooting time as much as possible in order to minimize disturbance. The same concern was behind my decision to focus the scene on the subject of “Memory.”  I sent a questionnaire to the students and parents of the two fifth grade classes at LaoSung that asked them to recount one unforgettable incident in the past year, or from when they were in fifth or sixth grade as the case may be.  At the same time, I asked them to illustrate the event with a sketch, these sketches were later used as the basis for setting up a scene for the photo shoot.
