In 2007, JUT Foundation for Arts and Architecture came into formation branching from its core architectural corporation. The intent is to combine the energies garnered from art, creative industry and culture to create outstanding and multifunctional living spaces and to promote artistic presentations and cultural education. In 2007, the “MUSEUM of TOMORROW” project was also launched, and it is based on the idea of “A Better Tomorrow”. In the past few years, internationally renowned architects have been invited to host symposiums and lectures on architectural and urban issues. The 2010 project, “UrbanCore Arts Block”, is an experimental project that is intended to use art to bring new vitalities into an old neighborhood.
“UrbanCore Arts Block” (2010-Sep. 2011) is between Ln.85 and Ln.91, Sec.1, Zhonghua Rd., Taipei, where’s considered old Taipei at the “Chengchung District”. The abandoned neighborhood contains buildings that are decades old, and is in the midst of the transition period of waiting to be dismantled for urban development planning. During this time, art and culture related NGO associations and other creative groups are invited to organize various events relating to art, architecture, visual images, urban, performing art, and many other creative genres. The interactions created are intended to inject new bursts of vitalities into the old community. This project in particular is titled “UrbanCore”, and the name is not only due to the site being located at the core of the city; it is also about bringing life back to an abandoned neighborhood that has lost its glory along the process of urban development. The “Core” symbolizes a beautiful fruit that has been taken and eaten till only the core is left, and the anticipation is through the nurturing vigor from art and culture to let the core be able to sprout and blossom once again.
