Going Public – Common Tasks Forum

Time: 2016.11.12-13,  13:00 – 18:00

Venue: MoNTUE, 1F No.134, Sec. 2, Heping E. Rd., Da’an Dist., Taipei (MRT: Technology Building station)

How to overcome the barriers of races, languages, people, countries and economic alliance in Southeast Asia and to map a more imaginative association to consider the “Common Tasks” among all disciplines and regions? When we observe the production of art in public domain, the grassroots cultural workers and public intellectuals all around Southeast Asia have demonstrated a unique way of practicing art to deal with the political reality. They build their public platforms independently or corporately to share the archive, projects and art education programs with their community. Are there any possibilities that these outcomes can work as references for each other? How do we walk down the path of mutual understanding by ways of conversations?

Organized by Taipei Contemporary Art Center, the “Going Public – Common Tasks” project is supported by Taiwan Ministry of Culture with The Emerald Initiative Grants for Cultural Exchanges & Collaborative Projects as well as under the patronage of RC Cultural and Arts Foundation. Curated by Meiya CHENG, this project is a 7-day gathering and a 2 day public forum which will take place at the Museum of National Taipei University of Education on the weekend of 12th -13th, Nov. The participants we invited from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore are all active cultural workers in Southeast Asia who will share their long-term locally originated activities and discourses about cultural research, moving image curation, the construction of digital culture theory, experimental public education program and the practical projects on long-term residential community organization. Through a series of talk gatherings with local scholars, curators and artists, the two parties from Taiwan and Southeast Asia will communicate in depth about the difficulties and practices context they’ve had in their practices in the public domain. By virtue of the mutual references created from these talks, we are able to reconsider once again the “Common Tasks” of our own.

One of the invited speakers is Ade Darmawan, the director of ruangrupa in Jakarta, Indonesia, and the executive director of Jakarta Biennale since 2013. Ruangrupa, an artists’ initiative, established for 15 years until today, concentrates on infusing and promoting the concept and activities of visual arts through various events such as curation, visual arts lab, workshops, research and publishing projects among the urban environment.

Syafiatudina is the curator and researcher for Kunci Culture Studies Center in Yogyakarta, Indonesia who sees curation as the interaction of theory and practice while the art practice as part of the knowledge-based production. Based in KUNCI, she has been proceeding with critical knowledge production and distribution by means of media publication, cross-disciplinary encounter, action-research, artistic intervention and vernacular education within and across community spaces.

Andreas Siagian is an interdisciplinary artist and the co-founder of several initiatives organizations, such as “lifepatch.” Lifepatch is founded by a group of interdisciplinary professionals consist of hackers, computer engineers, artists and cultural promoters. Base in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, lifepatch engages in the integration of art, science and technology by adapting innovative technology and actively promoting the spirit and concept of DIY(Do-It-Yourself) and DIWO(Do-It-with-Others)  in public domain that leads to various kinds of interesting ideas to be put into practice in daily life.

Narawan Kyo Pathomvat is a researcher, curator; the founder and director of The Reading Room in Bangkok, Thailand. The Reading Room is a small-scale library which works as a databank for literature reference and a connecting hub for contemporary art communication. On its open platform, a group of thinkers and film makers work on subjects of social sciences, cultural study and moving images are gathered here, to proceed and connect various experimental education programs with diverse knowledge fields.

Arlette Quynh-Anh is a Vietnamese curator and writer. Her curatorial practices consider art as catalyst which uses visual language to interpret, question, and narrate multiple spheres of life. She is also a member of the art group Art Labor. Art Labor focuses on the exploration among visual arts, social sciences and life sciences which extend an alternative and informal knowledge context through diverse productive art and culture activities.

Roslisham Ismail is Malaysian multidisciplinary artist whose works include installation, video art, and participatory projects. His practice is largely involved with the expressions of popular culture which in his eye is an alternative representation of local culture and history. He is also the founder of Parking project, an artist’s space based in his apartment in Kuala Lumpur.

Qinyi Lim is an independent curator and writer based in Singapore. She previously held curatorial positions at Para Site, Hong Kong; National University of Singapore Museum and the Singapore Art Museum. Lim insights on the contemporary art ecology and development in Singapore, Hong Kong and even the whole Southeast Asia is thorough and unique.
