Why is Southeast Asian art so fascinating that rises rapidly in recent years? What kinds of artistic characteristics does each of the countries in Southeast Asia offer regarding their diverse cultural context? The talk invites Tang Fu Kuen, an independent dramaturge, curator and producer, and Lo Shih Tung, an artist who devotes his efforts to Southeast Asian art, to talk and share their experiences in Southeast Asia.

About Speaker

Tang Fu Kuen is an independent dramaturge, curator, and producer in the fields of contemporary performance and visual arts. Singapore-born, Bangkok-based, and recently relocated to Taipei, he has produced various projects in Asia and Europe. He was the sole curator of the Singapore pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, presenting artist Ming Wong who received special jury mention. He has worked in the Singapore Arts Festival, Indonesian Dance Festival, In Transit Festival (Berlin), Bangkok Fringe Festival, Colombo Dance Platform, TPAM (Yokohama), etc.

Lo Shih Tung, born in 1983, graduated with a Master’s degree in Graduate School of Plastic Arts in National Taiwan University of the Arts. He currently lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan. Lo focuses on the special textures present in our daily life, seeing them as in Walter Benjamin’s discourse — fragments and reflections of a complete structure and world. His works can be viewed as organic documents, unlimited to specific mediums, attempting to arouse inquiry and contemplation on ever-changing warped messages. Lo has participated in the 2011 Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris/ France, and also Une terrible poetique, La Biennale de Lyon, France.
