Date | 2016.08.13, 2pm
Venue | Taipei Contemporary Art Center, No. 11, Lane 49, Baoan Street, Taipei (MRT Daqiaotou Station)
Speaker | Tyler Coburn

For this talk, Tyler Coburn will discuss two recent examples of extraterritorial city building.  The first, explored in his essay Charter Citizen (2014), concerns technolibertarian efforts to build autonomous city-states in beleaguered third-world countries. While these efforts are not new to the libertarian cause, they distinguish themselves in largely being financed and imagined by key players from Silicon Valley.  The second, U (2014 – 2016), is a video based on Coburn’s fieldwork in Songdo, South Korea.  During the summer of 2014, Coburn lived in this “ubiquitous city,” where he interviewed employees of the Integrated Operations Center, who monitor the surveillance and sensor data generated by the city.  The resulting video takes form as a series of fictional group therapy sessions for workers in a smart city.  Technology’s remaking of the world, Coburn’s video implies, extends from the scale of the built environment to the most intimate notions of self.
