Can we call Taiwan New Cinema a case closed after thirty years of its development? By employing a new perspective from contemporary art, we have rediscovered many visual artists’ engagements and activities in the film making industry: thirty years ago, photographer Chang Chao-Tang participated in cinematographic work in The Woman of Wrath and Last Train to Tanshui; designer Liu Kai designed a series of movie posters for Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang, and played as a movie billboard painter in Dust in the Wind; artist Kao Chung-Li played a photographer in The Time to Live and The Time to Die, artist Lin Ju played the monk in the Dust in the Wind while also working as the artistic director in the production, and he even played in the fight scene as a gangster in A City of Sadness and Daughter of the Nile; video artist Wang Jun Jieh was a film critic, artist Yao Jui-Chung participated in A Confucian Confusion as the artistic director and was even nominated by the Golden Horse Award; Wang Gengyu participated in The Time to Live and The Time to Die, Sayonara, Goodbye!, Dust in the Wind, Daughter of the Nile, etc.

According to these particular connections and networks, Issue 63 of Art Critique of Taiwan presents the feature “The Revival Rhizome Plan for Taiwan New Cinema in the Context of Contemporary Art” to organize a paper exhibition in the diverse forms of rhizome as an action to re-articulate our understanding on the film development in Taiwan with commissioned interviews, artistic projects, curatorial proposals and essays.
