Since 2006 and the opening of KUMU Estonian Musum of Art in Tallinn two new museums of modern and contemporary art have opened in the former-Warsaw Pact territory of Europe: in Vilnius, Lithuania (former-USSR) and Zagreb, Croatia (former-Yugoslavia). Meanwhile, existing major museums have been refurbished or extended in St Petersburg, Russia (former-USSR) and Belgrade, Serbia (former-Yugoslavia), Ljubljana, Slovenia (former-Yugoslavia) and Lodz, Poland. And architectural competitions and/or construction started for similar institutions in Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice and Torun (all Poland); Riga, Latvia; and Minsk, Belarus, plus private museums to be built on a similar scale to the aforementioned national institutions have opened or are opening in Prague, Czech Republic, and Kiev, Ukraine. It is a formidable list and sets art and cultural historians an equally formidable challenge to decribe what it means and how these institutions operate.
