A Case Study

Talk #1 Highlights:

Text/ Tiffany Lay

During Lee Kit’s artist in residence program at TCAC he hopes to bring the relationship between artists and curators closer together. So that an artist not just manufactures and produces artworks but is also involved in the execution and presentation of their works. As an artist that temporary represents TCAC he hopes to show the ways that artist can contribute in a residential community, and how he can change spaces to create new environments.

Lee Kit, as an established artist representing Hong Kong in Venice in addition to multiple shows before presenting at TCAC. Through his stubborn attitude and being always true to himself not changing a bit for anyone, has successfully led him to create artworks that represents his true self and his perception towards art, society and family. He believes that art starts from the self – an individualistic approach to art.  However to him art isn’t just about the himself. Art to Lee Kit is like three peas in a pod, there is society, family, and art as the three peas all fitting into one pod the individual, connecting and uniting the three together.

He expresses his frustrations when people talk about “art”, because they often only refer to the art industry or about people affiliated with the art world but not about artworks itself. In addition to his frustrations about the art production system and how art has become a sign of capital. However in response to his frustrations he says that he is aware that there are a lot of things in the world that just can’t simply be changed but are just part of the system that we must face. He understands that art doesn’t change the world, but art can influence individuals who can then make an impact in the world. He emphasizes on the individualistic approach where an individual must first understand him or her self and their perspective, then make little changes in everyday life, those modest changes can result in a larger overall influence.
