羅智信 –〈Like a Urinal in a Nightclub,像是一個夜店的小便斗〉

Like a Urinal in a Nightclub by Luo Jr-Shin

You came and went. Here I was, taking in your silence and your chatter. Names were exchanged, titles never mentioned again. I thought about what you just consumed and what you were letting out, some golden liquid turning into another. You were like a filter, matters passed through you and became a part of you. I am but an ingredient interpreter, your secrets are safe with me. It would just be like confiding to a treehole – we all know that treeholes stay silent.

— Note on the wall in a restroom of a Taipei nightclub

This is a monologue of a urinal.

A urinal is an object that allows fluid to pass through. A filter and a keeper of secrets, it resides inconspicuously in the corner, tenderly awaiting.

A urinal reflects the human body, a vehicle through which matters travel. A restroom, although with a specific functionality, exhibits a duality both private and public that makes room for socialization. Human activities, via a series of visual, physical, and olfactory stimulation, are ultimately reflected in the artwork.

“Secrets cannot be kept forever. They find a way out.”

Like a science experiment, “secrets” pass through “treeholes” to assume new identities. This transformation is not unlike the process of encoding, encryption, and decoding. The recurring set of colors serves as a form of index in this experiment.

Artist Bio
Luo Jr-Shin was born in 1984, Taiwan. His practice attempts to capture ephemeral moments and often engages in common objects, merging and intensifying incompatibility and absurdity in daily life. Through the rich connotation embedded in these found objects, an alternative reality is reproduced. The viewers are invited to notice the trace of the daily life and its slight displacement from the origin, stimulating their imagination with a sense of humor. Luo was nominated for Taipei Award in 2012. His work has been presented at Taipei Biennial 2014, Taiwan; Queens Museum, New York; Times Museum, Guangzhou, China; Hubei Museum of Art, China and Asia Cultural Center, Korea.

About 2 Weeks
Centered on the TCAC 2018 annual theme of “Art Lab,” the program 2 Weeks is a series of process-based exhibitions focusing on the narrative and performativity of space. 2 Weeks will invite one artist or one curator to occupy the TCAC for two weeks. Each artist or curator will make new site-specific works based on his/her own past research and practices. One or more scenes will be created and various public activities will be held during their residencies.

A scene usually carries viewers’ imaginations toward a certain space, with imagination mediated by viewers’ perceptions. We wonder, in a laboratory equipped with all kinds of apparatuses, if the science experiment is the only activity that takes place. 2 Weeks attempts to address space as medium, and to imagine the possible outcomes of generating uncertainty, scene and timeline. During the given timeframe, not only will the steps of conducting experiments(repetition, documentation and analysis) in a science lab be examined through artistic practices, but also the connections and analogies between art and science experiments will be presented. Like the different approaches used by scientists to change the phases of matter, the various functions of space will be performed at the TCAC. By accumulating narratives and scenes in space within the given timeframe, the potential of an alternative public space is unlocked.

In order to extend the viewing timeframe and its dimension, this series of exhibitions simultaneously takes place in real space and virtual space by including social media as part of the viewing channel. The images of exhibition-making and scene-making that are disseminated on social media platforms will then be turned into another form of exhibition. Viewers and participants are provoked to think about think how the immaterial, such as process, scene, performativity, and narrative, is exhibited. How is perceived information shaped by ways of looking?
