Centered around TCAC’s 2018 annual theme “Art Lab,” the program 2 Weeks is a series of process-based exhibitions focusing on space as a medium. 2 Weeks attempts to imagine the possible outcome of producing uncertainty, the scene and timeline in a given space. Through various channels of seeing and viewing, the performativity, the narrative and scenes are unfold over time.

TCAC is pleased to invite the second artist-in-residence for the series 2 Weeks, Chang Wen Hsuan (b. 1991). Her new site-specific project Writing FACTory will investigate entangled relations between artists, artworks and publications. In the 50’s and 60’s, artists’ books are seen as a resistant gesture to escape from the institutionalized system of galleries and museums. It now, however, cannot sustain its independence in the digital age with monetized copyrights and capital. In order to change that, Chang will to create a space that facilitates to freely and equally produce knowledge and artists’ books. In Writing FACTory, TCAC will be turned into a pirating factory and a formal seminar venue. Both of them are contrast settings where knowledge is framed, shared and circulated. In spite of the setting of the space, a banned-songs karaoke will be held and merge with performance lecture, a popular format in contemporary art world. In so doing, Chang’s reflection on the role of artists’ book, language and the mechanism of producing knowledge in current times is then revealed.

Artist Bio:
Chang Wen Hsuan, born in Shengang, Changhua in 1991, now lives and works in Taichung. She is especially attentive to the subject of “fiction”. In her work, “fiction” is a narrative action that connects history with politics. The extension of history and politics within fiction is a way of managing the relationships and dynamics between individual stories and the writing of history.
