Cinema of Exhibition means moving images presented in art gallery and museum. It could be video artwork, different from films made in traditional film industry. It also touches upon questions of installing and presenting moving images in the space of art institutions. The former emphasizes that Cinema of Exhibition as a form of moving images has its definitive language and expression; the latter shows that Cinema of Exhibition includes ways of building knowledge in terms of curating and confronting systematic politics in art institution.

Cinema of Exhibition is a concept that continues evolving. Through the author’s writing and research, he hopes to present the rich layers of the increasingly diversified practices of moving image in contemporary Chinese society. As the “modernization” of Chinese art world has just begun, the book on the one hand addresses the complex social and political conditions as well as artistic and cultural issues in China. On the other hand, it also documents the rapid transformation in the practice influenced by frequent international exchanges.

Invited by the publisher Pon D’Art, Dong Bingfeng, the author of Cinema of Exhibition, Amy Cheng, the renowned independent curator, and Professor Song-yong Sing will join the book launch. Cheng and Sing both have years of practical experiences in writing and curating moving images. The event will be divided into two sections: the first one will be a presentation by the author Dong Bingfeng with several major topics in this book, including the emergence of independent films in China, how the development of digital technology directly or indirectly affects social changes, and the ongoing debates of museum as contemporary exhibition space.

The second section will be a discussion between Dong Bingfeng, Amy Cheng and Song-yong Sing. They will share the filmic elements and the consciousness of social movement in video art, as well as their observations and thoughts in years of researching, curating and presenting movie-images.
